Longa and I

This photograph was taken in 2008 at the YU Press Photo awards. What makes it deeply personal is that it captures both me and my colleague Igor Pavićević. We grew up in the exact same neighborhood in Belgrade and we both lived on the top floors of our buildings. From my building, I could see his terrace just a hundred meters away, separated only by the playground where I used to play football with the neighborhood boys as a young girl. Back then, everyone knew him by his nickname, Longa. I only learned his real name years later when our paths crossed in the same profession. I always looked up to him with genuine admiration as a tall, older boy, a friend of my brother, who was always kind to me back then. Nowadays, I still deeply respect him both as a colleague and for the man he has become.
